Google Focuses on Artificial Intelligence at Conference

Google seems to be interested in getting into just about everything. They are king of searches on the Internet. They have the number one browser for surfing the Internet. Android dominates mobile browsing. With Google Fiber they hope to disrupt Internet service providers.

Google just had their developers conference this week. I am not sure they did much to alleviate alot of people's (including Tesla founder Elon Musk) fears that they were becoming something akin to the mega AI from the Terminator movies.

Google's AI was so human-like they showed that it could call a hair salon to book an appointment without the salon employee even realizing that it was talking to a robot.

The AI will also be able to learn from you so that it will be able to pretty much wite emails for you. As you write it will suggest what it thinks should be the next word. It is not quite up to the point of "Send a love letter to my girlfriend," but it may be soon.

But, Google's AI will soon be able to speak in the voice of John Legend, in case that was something you were missing from your life.

AT&T Gets Another DoJ Anti-Trust Investigation?

AT&T and Verizon are the main targets for another possible investigation by the United States Department of Justice.

AT&T is already fighting in the courts for permission to merge with (or buy) Time Warner Studios.  This new investigation includes AT&T along with the other three major mobile companies but the DoJ is focusing on AT&T and Verizon. Verizon and AT&T also offers DSL Internet connections plus video along with their telephone services.

The investigations main thrust is that the four major wireless carriers are making it more tricky than neccessary for customers to switch their mobile service to another company. The SIM cards are the major issue. They are needed to make phones work. The DoJ is looking into whether AT&T and the big carriers and the telecommunications standards organization, GSMA, are working together to keep other technology from being put into phones and other devices that would make it easier to switch carriers.

Apple, the maker of the iPhone was one of the companies that brought the issue to the attention of the government.

Verizon called the investigation "much ado about nothing." AT&T said it was all done to provide better service to consumers. AT&T and Verizon already own about 70% of the US mobile market. AT&T provides DSL Internet, video and phone service.

Frontier and Communications Workers of America Settle Strike

Frontier Communications, a provider of DSL Internet, phone and video service, and the union that represents their workers, the Communications Workers of America (CWA District 2-13) have ended their strike in West Virginia and Virginia.

The strike had only lasted for three weeks and was ended after the two came to a new contract agreement. The union representing 1400 workers called the strike in early March after the two had failed to reach a contract agreement. 

Frontier's DSL Internet, telephone and video service was not unduly affected by the strike.

After claiming that striking workers threatened violence to Frontier employees, committed vandalism and destruction of property, blocked access to property and other issues, Frontier had filed a request for an injunction against the striking CWA membersalleging “rampant unlawful activity.” The CWA called the injunction request an “overreaction.”

States Plan to Thwart FCC on Net Neutrality Repeal

The governors of several states have made rules to ensure their local Internet Service Providers follow net neutrality rules. The Governors of Montana and New York have issued executive orders to say that in order to be eligible to do business with the state they have to abide by net neutrality rules.

That means the local DSL Internet Service providers in the state will not do things like throttle or create fast lanes and charge more for them. The idea is to bypass the FCC that has repealed the net neutrality rules passed in 2016 by the FCC when it had different members.

A lot of people see the repeal by Ajit Pai's FCC as Pai doing the work of his previous employer, Verizon. ALthough there my be only one choice for DSL Internet Service in an area, the governor's orders may help to ensure the customers get better service.

Frontier Communications Corporation announced recently that the company has exceeded its 2017 Connect America Fund (CAF) milestones in all of the 29 states it serves. Frontier can now provide Internet to half of its eligible households under the Federal Communications Commission's CAF program. Plus, almost 1 million households now have increased speed from the infrastructure upgrades in their communities. The improvements are the result of CAF funding and Frontier capital investment and exceeded the program requirements which was to reach 40% of the eligible households by the end of last year.
